Explanations for rejected validations
During validation, users must prove their identity. If any aspect of the validation comes into question, DigiCert's identification specialists are instructed to cancel the validation. When this happens, you will see a rejection reason.
Fraud
General
Falsified ID document | The ID document is completely fraudulent. |
Your ID verification seems to be the result of a social engineering attempt | The user is a victim of a social engineering attempt. Important: The user is not being accused of committing fraud, but of being tricked into performing an identity verification. |
Identity theft attempted | User tried to steal someone else's identity. |
Front side of the ID document manipulated | User tried to digitally modify the front of the ID document. |

Information manipulation
ID document manipulated | The ID document is manipulated. Examples of this may include fields that have been changed or a photo that has been replaced. |
Data on the ID document is inconsistent | Information listed on the ID document demonstrates inconsistencies, such as differences between visible zone and the machine-readable zone. |
ID document tampering detected | Document is modified on one or both sides, or the user is attempting to use a different document for one side. |
ID document fields manipulated | Fields from the document are individually modified. For example, the user may have intentionally covered specific fields or otherwise changed them. |
Incorrect checksum on the ID document | A checksum on the ID document is wrong. |
Security features
Security features modified | User attempted to tamper with the document's security features, which can include UV ink, barcodes, ghost imaging, or other feature. |
Security features digitally manipulated | User tried to digitally modify the security features of the document, such as using a photo manipulation program or similar. |
Images
Person does not match the ID document | The person in the selfie is different from the person photographed in the ID document. |
Physical description on the ID document does not match the person in the photo | The description of the person on the ID document (for example, height, eye color, age) does not match the person in the selfie. |
Liveness and image manipulated | User tried to digitally modify the photo. |
Liveness left image manipulated | User tried to digitally modify the image taken during the left-side liveness confirmation. |
Liveness right image manipulated | User tried to digitally modify the image taken during the right-side liveness confirmation. |
Liveness not verified | User's liveness could not be verified. For example, they tried to use a different person in the selfie and the liveness check or held up a photograph to the camera. |
Visibility
Face not clearly visible | Photo of the person during selfie, liveness check, or the document is not clearly visible due to insufficient lighting or an obstruction. |
Photo not clearly visible | Photo of the ID document is not clearly visible because of glare on the document, shadows, or fingers on the visible fields in the document. |
Security features not clearly visible | Security features on the ID document are not clearly visible because the user did not tilt the ID card properly or there is a glare in the process. |
Validity
Photo not valid | The photo quality of the document or of the person does not meet validation standards. |
ID document not valid | The user attempted to use an ID document with an issue that invalidates it, such as using an expired document. |
Other
ID document not supported | The user attempted to use an ID document not supported by our system. |
ID document damaged | The chosen ID document is damaged. |
Incorrect portion of the document scanned | The user attempted to scan a portion of the document different from the prompt. For example, when prompted to scan the back side of the document, they scanned the front side, or they scanned the wrong page of the passport. |
The identifying person must complete all verification steps themselves | The user is not the person who should have performed the identification, but our identification specialist sees that this is a matter of ignorance or misunderstanding, not a fraud case. |
User is not old enough to use the service | The person attempting validation is below the required age set by the customer and is therefore not allowed to use the service. |
Invalid verification | Other miscellaneous reason for rejecting this validation. |
