SMPB decryption using DigiCert Trust Assistant

This guide outlines the process of decrypting an SMPB (Structured Managed PKI Batch) file using DigiCert® Trust Assistant. It provides step-by-step instructions to help you perform the decryption successfully and ensure secure handling of the decrypted data.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that the following requirements are met:

Requirement

Description

Software version

DigiCert Trust Assistant version 1.2.8 or later must be installed.

Certificate availability

A valid certificate containing the corresponding private key must be available in DigiCert Trust Assistant. The certificate must match the recipient information embedded in the SMPB file.

Hardware token (if applicable)

If your certificate resides on a hardware token, ensure the token is connected and accessible.

SMPB file validity

The .smpb file to be decrypted must be valid and accessible on your system.

Decrypting an SMPB file

You can decrypt an SMPB file using DigiCert Trust Assistant by following the below steps:

  1. In your file explorer, navigate to the folder where the .smpb file is stored.

  2. Double-click the .smpb file.

    1. If DigiCert Trust Assistant is installed, it will launch automatically.

    2. However, if the DigiCert PKI Client is also installed, it may open the file instead, depending on your system’s default file association. To ensure the file opens with DigiCert® Trust Assistant, right-click the .smpb file and select Open with > DigiCert Trust Assistant.

DigiCert Trust Assistant will begin the decryption process.

  3. If your private key is protected by a PIN, DigiCert Trust Assistant will prompt you to enter your PIN before continuing.

  4. Once the process is complete, an informational dialog appears confirming that the SMPB file has been decrypted successfully.

  5. The decrypted content is saved in the same location as the original .smpb file.

Opmerking

If DigiCert Trust Assistant is not running, the decryption process might take longer to initiate.
