Install client authentication certificate in your browser

To sign in to your DigiCert​​®​​ account using client certificate authentication, your browser must have your client certificate installed and accessible. Follow the steps below to install your client authentication certificate in your browser.

Tip

You need your certificate password to finish this process.

Step 1: Install your client authentication certificate

Select the browser you want to install your certificate in. This is based on the browser you’re most likely to use to sign in to DigiCert.

These browsers use the Windows certificate store.

Install certificate

  1. Double-click the .p12 or .pfx file. This opens the Certificate Import Wizard.

  2. Select Current User > Next.

  3. Go to your file location and select Next.

  4. Enter the certificate password and check:

    1. Mark this key as exportable

    2. Include all extended properties

  5. Select Next.

  6. Select Automatically select the certificate store (recommended).

  7. Select Finish.

Verify certificate in browser

  1. Open Manage user certificates from the Windows search bar.

  2. Navigate to Personal > Certificates.

  3. Look for your DigiCert certificate with Client Authentication listed under Intended Purposes.

Firefox uses its own certificate store and requires manual import.

Install certificate

  1. Open Firefox.

  2. Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security.

  3. Scroll to Certificates, then select View Certificates.

  4. Under the Your Certificates tab, select Import.

  5. Select your .p12 or .pfx file.

  6. Enter the certificate password when prompted.

Verify certificate in browser

The certificate should appear under Your Certificates, and be marked for Client Authentication.

Safari uses the macOS Keychain for certificates.

Install certificate

  1. Find Open Keychain Access via Spotlight.

  2. Open Keychain Access.

  3. From the menu, select File > Import Items.

  4. Select your .p12 or .pfx file.

  5. Import into the login keychain (default).

  6. Enter the certificate password when prompted.

Verify certificate in browser

You should see your DigiCert certificate under Login > My Certificates. It should include a private key (expand the arrow beside the certificate to confirm).

Step 2: Test your login

  1. Restart your browser.

  2. Navigate to the DigiCert client authentication login page:

  3. When prompted, select your client authentication certificate.

    Tip

    If you aren’t prompted or get a certificate error:

    • Use an incognito or private window

    • Clear cached certificate decisions

    • Confirm the certificate is valid and includes a private key
